The 2026 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) is always a star-studded ceremony, but this year, it was a royal one. Arriving at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall after the official red carpet wrapped, Prince William and Princess Kate made a surprise appearance—their first at the event in several years.

For the prince, who has served as the president of the BAFTAs since 2010, the gala called for a velvet blazer in one of the year’s biggest colors: burgundy. The piece, which was finished with classic black lapels for a bit of contrast, was worn over a stark white button-down shirt and black bowtie. He paired the look with black trousers and shiny dress shoes.

By his side, Kate looked radiant in an off-the-shoulder Gucci gown, designed with overlays of transparent pink and white gathered panels. At her waist, a velvet burgundy belt made for the perfect subtle matching moment between the royals. Her clutch, too, was made from the same shade and fabric.

The princess’ hair was curled in long waves for the evening, and she accessorized with dangly diamond earrings with delicate drops and a coordinating cuff bracelet.
While this was the royal couple’s first time at the awards in several years, their history with the ceremony dates back to 2011—when Kate made her BAFTA debut in a lavender gown designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. Since then, the pair has attended the event a handful of times between 2017 and 2020, before most recently making an appearance at the 2023 edition.
