Gabourey Sidibeās husband, Brandon Frankel, shared a personal and important message via social media concerning his health.
āThings I never thought Iād have to post: I was diagnosed with Stage I Papillary Thyroid cancer. I found it very early because I pushed for an ultrasound my doctor didnāt think I needed,ā Frankel began on Instagram on Friday, February 20.
He went on to list the various ways he advocated for himself, writing, āI refused to 'wait and see.ā I refused to come back in 6ā9 months. I made the calls. I leveraged connections. I chased cancellations. I made a LOT of noise. It worked.ā
Frankel confirmed that his surgery āwent wellā and that heās āokay for now,ā before discussing the importance of early detection.
āPathology showed a more aggressive cell type (tall cell), so thereās more monitoring ahead. But we caught it early. Iām extremely proactive, so I can be around for my family,ā he explained. āHereās the uncomfortable truth: Early detection didnāt just possibly save my life. Access and advocating for myself did.ā

Frankel highlighted that he had āinsurance,ā ātime,ā and āpeople who could help move things faster,ā while ātoo manyā people in his situation donāt.
The father of two also addressed the many flaws in America's healthcare system.
āHealthcare shouldnāt reward the loudest, the most connected, or the most financially secure. It shouldnāt require strategy, privilege, and stamina just to feel safe,ā he reasoned. āMy wife carried our family through all of thisāholding everything down while I handled appointments, surgery, and recovery. I donāt know how anyone does this without that kind of love and support. Iām grateful. Iām lucky. But luck and means shouldnāt be a healthcare plan. The system is broken. Healthcare should be a basic human right. PLEASE advocate for yourself, and be proactive!ā
Sidibe, a longtime actress, best known for her roles in Precious and Empire, and Frankel tied the knot in 2021. In 2024, the loving couple welcomed twins Cooper and Maya.
