Patrick Mahomes’ recovery is underway — and coach Andy Reid is seemingly cautiously optimistic. On Monday, April 20, Reid shared an update on Mahomes’ status, four months after the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback tore his ACL and LCL in his left knee.“He goes to meetings, he can lift, do all of that, rehab,” Reid told the media on the first day of the team’s offseason training camp. “That’s the phase he is in right now, so we will just see — play it by ear and see where he is at. He’s doing great but we just have to be smart with this thing.”The head coach’s assessment has not changed since his comments late last month about Mahomes’ readiness come September 5, the first game of the 2026 regular season.

"Every player is different. I will tell you though, I would never bet against him," Reid said of Mahomes, 30, at the NFL's annual meetings on Tuesday, March 31, according to ESPN. "He's going to put in the time and effort and always push it but within reason, so he doesn't take steps back."He added, "So far, it's all been positive. He's doing great."Follow your favorite athletes on and off the field with PEOPLE's free sports newsletter — sign up now!The three-time Super Bowl champion has shared glimpses into his recovery. On March 25, Mahomes posted an Instagram video of himself throwing a football on a turf field inside a training facility. He sported a black brace on his injured left leg for the practice session.

After his injury on December 14 during the waning minutes of a loss against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes underwent surgery in Dallas, followed by near-immediate rehab back in Kansas City. The signal-caller later shared his expectations with reporters, telling them "that's the goal, to play Week 1 and have no restrictions."In a post on Instagram last week, Mahomes’ surgical scar was on full display, where he wore shorts during an outing with his family at a ranch resort in Texas.
